Born in 1962, Suzanne Collins is the youngest of four to a family who moved frequently due to her father’s career in the Air Force. Growing up, she stayed mostly in Europe and the eastern half of the United States. Ms. Collins enjoyed reading, gymnastics (like Luxa), and exploring in the woods (like Katniss) as a child.
She moved to New York City, NY in 1987 and began writing for children’s television in 1991. She has worked on numerous Emmy-nominated Nickelodeon shows and was Head Writer on Clifford’s Puppy Days. There, she met fellow author, James Proimos, and began considering writing children’s literature.
One day, the idea of an urban Alice in Wonderland struck her, creating what would soon be known as the five-part series, The Underland Chronicles. The books became New York Times bestsellers and was the perfect platform for Ms. Collins to continue on to her next series, the Hunger Games trilogy.
The Hunger Games originated from several ideas. One was the sequence of two different channels on television--one show was about reality TV and the other was coverage on the Iraq War. Another was the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The ideas then merged into the story of war in a reality show and a government that advocates the cruelty.
The Hunger Games trilogy currently consists of two well-respected, award-winning books, with the third book expected later this year.
Suzanne Collins currently lives in Connecticut with her husband, two kids, and two cats.
